RUSH or PRIORITY cases

The "Rush" or "Same-day" biopsy runs are the 10 am, 12 pm, and 2 pm biopsy runs. These specimens are usually grossed by the PAs or techs. These have no specific clinical urgency, however, they are small enough to be processed same-day.

Conversely, a case that is requested as "Rush" or "Priority" by the clinician, surgeon, or attending pathologist is a case OF ANY SIZE that has clinical urgency and needs expedited processing. These can be biopsies, routines, bigs, or fat cases.

If a case is requested as "Rush" or "Priority" by the clinician, surgeon, or attending pathologist, please do the following:

  1. Use the red "PRIORITY" stamp at the front desk to stamp the requisition.
  2. Designate in Vantage that this case is for rush processing.
  3. When you are done grossing the case, notify the front desk and give them the requisition.  They will print out a working draft, stamp it "PRIORITY" and flag it with a colored sticky-tab.
  4. Histology will notify the resident/fellow/attending once the case is delivered to their box for review.
